Modern science operates on an assumption so deep it is rarely stated as an assumption: matter is primary. Consciousness emerges from matter. The brain, which is made of atoms, produces the experience of being conscious — somehow.
This is not a proven position. It is a working assumption that has produced extraordinary results in the domains where it applies. It has also produced, as a side effect, a civilisation that is systematically confused about the nature of experience — because it starts from a premise that makes experience itself inexplicable.
The so-called Hard Problem of Consciousness — why any physical process should produce subjective experience at all — is not a technical gap waiting to be filled. It is a structural problem with the assumption. No account of neurons firing can explain why there is something it is like to be the person reading these words. The gap is not empirical. It is ontological.
The non-dual traditions do not solve the Hard Problem. They dissolve it — by reversing the assumption. If Consciousness is primary rather than derivative, if matter appears within Consciousness rather than Consciousness emerging from matter, the Hard Problem does not arise. There is no mystery about how a physical process produces experience. There is no physical process prior to experience. Experience is the ground.
This is not a mystical assertion. It is an alternative metaphysical framework — one that starts from what is most immediately available (experience itself) rather than from a theoretical construct (matter). William James noticed this in 1904. Alfred North Whitehead built a systematic philosophy around it. More recently, philosophers of mind like David Chalmers and Thomas Nagel have argued that the materialist assumption cannot account for the basic facts of consciousness.
The practical implication of the non-dual position is significant. If consciousness is inside the universe, you are a small, temporary, contingent event — and every experience, including the deepest ones, is ultimately reducible to chemistry. If the universe is inside consciousness, you are — in your deepest nature — something that the universe is happening within. The fundamental character of reality and the fundamental character of your awareness are not different things.
This changes the question from what can I do? to what am I? And it changes the answer from a very small thing to a very large one.
