There is a quality that some people have that is difficult to name.

Not physical beauty exactly, though it often manifests as physical radiance. Not confidence exactly, though it produces a settled, undefended presence. Not health exactly, though it is the foundation of genuine health. It is something more fundamental — a quality of life force that is visible in the eyes, palpable in the presence, unmistakable when it is present and unmistakable when it is not.

Ayurveda calls it Ojas.

Ojas is the final refined product of the seven Dhatus — the seven tissues of the body — processed through the entire chain of transformation. When digestion is strong and the tissues are properly nourished, the final refinement of this process is Ojas: the most subtle, most refined, most vital substance the body produces.

It is the seat of the immune system. The substance that gives the mind its clarity and steadiness. The foundation of spiritual practice — the texts say that without adequate Ojas, no meditation deepens, no spiritual insight stabilises. The Tejas — the inner light — that people perceive in the presence of genuine spiritual practitioners is the visible expression of high Ojas.

Ojas is built slowly and depleted quickly. It takes thirty days of optimal living to produce one drop. It can be lost in a moment of extreme fear, one night of severe sleep deprivation, or years of chronic overwork that was mistaken for vitality.

The causes of Ojas depletion are precisely the features of modern ambitious life. Chronic overwork without adequate rest. Excessive sexual activity without replenishment. Emotional stress — particularly fear, grief, and anger — which Ayurveda identifies as the most direct consumers of Ojas. Fasting and extreme dietary restriction. Excessive talking, excessive exercise, excessive mental stimulation. All of these consume what took weeks to build.

The signs of Ojas depletion are the signs that are most commonly dismissed as normal: persistent fatigue. A dullness in the eyes. The immune system that catches everything that passes through the office. Anxiety that seems to have no cause. Difficulty with meditation or any sustained inner work. A sense of going through life with insufficient reserve — always operating from a deficit, never from fullness.

The practices for building Ojas are the practices that the busy mind resists most: sleep of adequate length and quality. Food that is pure, fresh, and lovingly prepared. Regular oil massage. Minimising the draining of energy through excessive output — whether physical, sexual, emotional, or cognitive. Meditation, which both builds and makes use of Ojas simultaneously. Being in the presence of people whose Ojas is high — because Ojas, uniquely, is transmitted through genuine contact.

The ancient texts list the primary Ojas-building foods: warm milk with saffron and cardamom. Ghee. Soaked almonds and dates. Fresh honey. Ashwagandha. These are not supplements in the modern sense — they are direct nourishment for the subtlest tissue.

Build slowly. Deplete consciously. The glow is not cosmetic. It is the visible evidence of a life being lived in alignment with the body's own intelligence.
